President Yoweri Museveni is in Kyankwanzi district to officiate at the closure of the two-week transformational leadership training for over 400 secondary school headteachers from the western region.
The training, which has been taking place at the National Leadership Institute, focused on leadership and mentorship of the young generation through intentional quality relationships, according to Irene Kauma, the Undersecretary/Senior Private Secretary to the First Lady.
Accompanied by the First Lady and the minister of education and sports, Mrs. Janet Museveni, the President was scheduled to address the headteachers on Saturday evening.
The head of State House Anti-Corruption Unit, Brig. Gen. Henry Isoke, also made a presentation to the headteachers on January 28 on the issue of transparency and accountability.
He highlighted the different forms of corruption in the education sector including, headteachers inflating nominal rolls to embezzle capitation grant funds and conspiracy with some district officials.
Isoke emphasised that such tendencies are a danger to the progress of the nation, they erode social trust, worsens inequality, as well as sabotaging development in the country.
He added that corruption in the education sector results in underqualified professionals, including; doctors, engineers, teachers, and pilots, among others, which results in doing shoddy work that leads to catastrophic losses.
On tackling corruption, he emphasised the need for enhancing regular school inspections by district officials for purposes of monitoring and accountability.
