A total of 82 Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) senior and junior officers have today (Friday) graduated from Makerere University in different disciplines.

Army deputy spokesperson Col. Deo Akiiki, who is also among those who graduated, said they completed studies in different disciplines related to defence, security, and medical studies.

“This is another day the Lord has made, for He has been good to us. We shall be glad and rejoice in it. Thank you the UPDF leadership for creating an enabling environment for us to be all-round officers to serve our country better,” he said.

He noted that Makerere’s 74th graduation ceremony, which started on January 29 and ending today, will be a historic occasion in the lifetime of UPDF, where for the first time a huge number of these officers will walk away with awards from the prestigious university in the region.

Among the officers, many of whom are National Defence Course (NDC) and Past Staff Course (PSC) holders, will be the pioneer group of NDC-U intake one and intake 17 of the year 2021-2022 of Senior Command and Staff College –Kimaka, Akiiki said.

Ten officers graduated with master’s of security strategy (holders of NDC-Uganda), 12 with master’s of defence and studies (holders of Senior Command and Staff Course (SCSC) Kimaka), and five with ordinary diplomas in strategy and warfare from SCSC.

The remaining officers who are from Uganda Military Academy Kabamba will obtain degrees in defence studies.

“The above military institutions are affiliated with Makerere University to deepen the shared vision of building a modern, efficient, and professional force that can neutralise modern criminality as guided by the President and Commander–in–Chief of the UPDF Gen Yoweri Museveni in 2001,” Akiiki said.

Those who are coming from NDC-U include Brig. Gen. Dr. Stephen Kusasira, the senior directing staff and head of research at the college; Brig. Gen. Daniel Mugumya Kakono – Commander Field Artillery Division based in Masindi; Brig Gen Flavia Byekwaso, former UPDF spokesperson and currently the Chief of Staff at the Jinja-based Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability Centre.

They graduated alongside their colleagues from Tanzania and Kenya, namely Lt Col Lusite Maxmillar Mmbone, Lt Col Wallace Roseann Nkatha (both from Kenya), and Lt Col Gaudence Joseph Mapunda (Tanzania).
